What is she doing in this place, quite unfamiliar to her, in the dead of the night, having sneaked out from some family outing that some friends had organised? Hell, if she really knew, but there is something ... intriguing about what she read in her bout of insomnia, something about the wandering spirits of the deceased and all that hangs together with it. There is simple and plain intrigue, and Vespa is nothing but weak to the call of adventure and - much more than that - Ghosts. How strange would it be to encounter such - would it actually help her to understand the perils of her current times more? Or maybe, she'll make a new acquaintance, just that they are more undead than alive? Or ... just ... something else. She isn't so sure yet.[break]

Now wandering the perimeters of Sootopolis alongside her trusted ghostly companion, Quinn Crisp the Misdreavus, she is actually crunching on a popsicle while she throws little ice cream bits, coated in chocolate, to the Misdreavus. Is it quite too chilly for such an icy treat? Maybe, probably, but it doesn't stop either as she feels her brain freeze. "Ugh ..." she mutters, unlocking her phone and squinting hard at the sudden light amidst the darkness, and posting something about how she regrets her life choices when - wait. She looks up. Is there a noise-?

Vespa isn't the only one with insomnia.[break][break]

Unable to sleep, Cillian haunts the streets of Sootopolis. Anger builds beneath his skin at the sight of water-damaged buildings and cracked streets, the thought of the League's foothold in Rocket's prize making him sick.[break][break]

It's the anger that sees him change from something human into something otherworldly, more shadow than man.[break][break]

A camera flash seems him turn toward the intrusion. Violet eyes narrow in accusation toward whatever - whoever, he realises, as he spots the girl - had dared disturbed his midnight reverie.[break][break]

He bares too-sharp teeth in silent warning.

To be honest, she hasn't though too much - her expectations were down below the basement when it came to such things as eerie occurrences, perhaps because she already feels rather familiar with Ghost types that she doesn't know whether or not she should give too much weight to those so-called ghost sightings and suchlike. It's an intriguing venture to follow when she feels sleepless and likes to wander, but at the same time ... Hm.[break]

How very curious, indeed.[break]
[break]
It's only after she tries to make out the numbers on her way-too-bright screen (she gotta change her lockscreen wallpaper ... for sure) that perhaps, she has to reconsider her thoughts and stances. Flinching back from ghastly shadows, there is yet ... undenying curiosity when she looks at something she does not know. Even the Misdreavus cowers a little, hiding behind the young student as they both watch the creature. "What ... who's there? Are you even here?"

What a silly question. Of course he is. She could see him, couldn't she? Why else would she be asking?

It takes Cillian a moment to realise that his current appearance makes him look more of a nightmare than another technically-human being out on a nighttime stroll.

So maybe the question's kind of valid, after all.

He blinks at her. Three pairs of eyes, all out of sync.

"Yes." The word ends in a soft hiss. Eyes narrow at the phone in her hand. He'd seen the flash of light, but had it been a light source or...? "Did you take a picture?"

Not hostile, not yet. Honestly, he's kind of curious. He's never thought to take a picture, before. Would he be invisible, like some fictional vampire? Blurred like a cryptid? Would the illusory aspects of his appearance be entirely absent? Partially? Or would an image capture all of his nightmarish glory?

In the darkness, it's difficult to say that she is really 'seeing' anything, but she does see the three pair of eyes - blinking - out of sync - and there lies the question, the urge to ask how the heck the other is doing it, but an ominous yes echoing in the chill air, so close to the turning of years. It throws her off, makes her blink - three times - subsequently, one after the other. She has no three pairs of eyes, after all.[break]

However, she her 't have really anticipated a nightmarish manifestation (she does not think of him as human, quite to be honest) to know about phones, or maybe he knows cameras and mistook the brief flash of light when she pressed the one/off button briefly as such, has made him aware? Huh ... It's somehow easing the situation a little, eerily enough, since that isn't something she feels completely out of the depths here. Yet. Probably. There is more curiosity and it isn't met with hurtful hostility just yet, so maybe ... just as long as she has a chance ... "Uh, no - I just - unlocked it for a little. Do you want me to take a picture?"[break]

Can we take a selfie? is just on the verge of being asked, but maybe, she should ... test the waters, first. Right. She can be reasonable. (Because it is so reasonable to ask a gnarly shadow for a selfie, yeah. Right.)

He's a little disappointed, because now he really wants to know what he looks like on camera. But he's not going to ask; that would break the illusion of his terror as thoroughly as if Lugia were to rob him of his shadows right then and there. He had a reputation to uphold.[break][break]

When she asks, though. Well.[break][break]

His smile is nothing short of terrifying, jagged teeth gleaming in the palest light of a distant streetlamp.[break][break]

"Why not?"[break][break]

He stays where he is, framed in the backdrop of the dark alleyway, and waits.[break][break]

"So long as you show me afterwards."[break][break]

And what'd she'd see if she looked through the phone's camera, or the picture after it was taken, would be a blur of shadows, claws, and teeth. Not quite the perfectly corporeal form before her but not invisible, either, more like a cryptid cameo. Six gold eyes gleam like a cat's in the dark.

She flinches at the gnarly smile that erupts - well, probably not fitting of a verb, it was really more of an eerie crawl or something, but it came as unexpected as the agreement for a photo. Or even the - is that even a smidge of curiosity that she could perceive from this strange creature? Hah ... surely not. Surely there is something more sinister at hand. There must be. Something like - like ...[break]

... like vanity?[break]

Huh-hoh. She's really losing her mind. But upon the agreement and the condition, she does manage to muster up a smile, "you got it!" At least curiosity is winning over her forlorn feeling of dread and she is able to lift her phone, setting up everything to capture this real-life, actually-existing eldritch horror in a picture. Which, now that she is watching the other through a lens, might not be as terrifying.[break]
[break]
For a moment, Vespa does not come over immediately, rather holding the picture next to the shadows from afar to gauge whether or not it'd be a picture worth showing. But ... considering she does not think she can manage any better with the - uh - given circumstances, she carefully approaches, turning the screen towards the other. "So ... hmm ... how'd you like that? I tried to capture you in full ... but - err - hey, not invisible! At least." Which only increases her urge to ask for a selfie, but - but ... ack, whatever. When does she even get the chance for something like this? Right? Right. "Uh, so ... if that's not - like - a hassle, or something, would ... would you mind a selfie with me? Just - y'know." She gestures inexplicably, and does not, in fact, elaborate on the y'know because she for sure does not know.

What a strange night this was shaping up to be.[break][break]

Cillian's mood has gone from sour to neutral, and it takes an effort to maintain the dark aura that shrouds him as the anger fades. He's not sure if that's why the image is so blurry, or whether something else is at play. Either way, he can't help but to be amused by the cryptid captured.[break][break]

Enough to indulge the woman, as she'd done for him.[break][break]

Caught between the endless cycle of we're so back! and it's so over, her thoughts are ping-ponging back and forth about whether or not she is to die in this moment over having asked such a frivolous thing from a shadowy figure as ghastly as the one in front of her (he looks pretty cool, though, all things considered). Having just had an apology ready to speak, she is surprised to find, however, that the cryptid agrees.[break]

Vespa needs a moment to process that, staring blankly at the other until - wait, yeah, okay, she should rush this now, so he doesn't change his mind, right? And a grin overtakes her face at the prospect of posing with what comes closest to a ghost without being actually a Ghost type, or perhaps this is a ghost ...? It feels rude to ask, though. Brushing unnecessary thoughts aside, she nods, giving him a thumbs-up, "yes! Thanks! It means a lot to me!" - stringing words together that don't appear as coherent, rushed out syllables of the moment.[break]
[break]
Fumbling with her camera settings a little, she then moves to stand in even closer proximity to the other, with still a respectful distance, holding her phone up with one hand and forming a peace sign on the other, she says, "say - uh - boo?" Actually, what is the etiquette on taking pictures with eldritch kind of horrors? Errr ... she should check in with her mother, maybe.

She keeps a respectful distance, but Cillian takes the initiative to lay a clawed hand on her shoulder. It carries the weight of flesh, but its touch is cold as the grave.[break][break]

And it would make it harder for skeptics to deny the experience.[break][break]

His laugh is deep and unsettling.[break][break]

"Boo."[break][break]

Jagged teeth gleam in the light of the camera's flash.[break][break]

He removes his hand as soon as the picture is taken and rescinds her personal space to her so as not to appear as a threat. She'd done him the service of fixing his foul temper.[break][break]

He wonders if, in the coming days and weeks, someone will correctly identify the Harbinger as her cryptid companion. How she might feel to know that she'd posed next to one of Hoenn's Most Wanted.[break][break]

For now, he only dips his head.[break][break]

Her expression must have been comical, an indescribable sound of surprise escaping her when she feels the chill touch on her shoulder - the coldness isn't quite unfamiliar with how she is befriending one Ghost type after another, but this here feels distinct, still, catching her off-guard, like it is a different substance than what she would have associated with her ghostly friends. Strange ... for sure. Definitely makes it clear that this isn't necessarily a ghost, or not the type of ghost she is used to.[break]

A real 'monster' (whatever that word means, now)?[break]
[break]
Still, steeling her nerves, Vespa grins into the camera like a fool on the chopping block, though it's also not like she feels as if she's in danger. In fact, for as terrifying this presence looked, he almost ... comes off as amicable. At least now - at least here. Once photography got involved, anyway. The thought even makes her grin more genuinely as she looks at the selfie, then to the other, an easy "thanks, man!" escaping into the chill night as shadows merge with shadows once more.[break]

"You, too!" Vespa gives the stranger a wave, unaware just who she has been conversing with ... For now, she is only humming a tune or two, looking through the spooky images and, as one may be indulged to do, posts the best one to the social media consciousness.
